Japan’s Nanto to Build AI Data Center Rivaling OpenAI’s Stargate
Nanto City in Toyama Prefecture is partnering with GigaStream Toyama to develop a 3.1-gigawatt data center, positioning it as Japan's third major hub for computing infrastructure. The facility's scale rivals OpenAI's $500 billion Stargate project, targeting surging AI demand.
The first phase will deliver 400 megawatts—comparable to Japan's largest existing centers—with capacity for hyperscalers like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. Toyama's seismic stability and proximity to Tokyo/Osaka make Nanto a strategic alternative to saturated urban corridors.
